A Guide to
purchasing the right yoga DVD from Real Bodywork!
-
First
figure out what level you are at: beginner, intermediate
or advanced yoga practitioner. This will help to narrow
down what yoga DVD you will consider.
-
Next
decide if you prefer the beauty of an outdoor
environment, or the focus of an indoor environment.
Watching a teacher filmed indoors can be less
distracting, but practicing to a yoga DVD set in a
beautiful natural surrounding can also be inspiring.
There is no right or wrong here.
-
Watch a
few minutes of the yoga DVD sample clip. You should
enjoy the teacher's voice, since you will primarily be
listening to them speak while you practice yoga.
-
Look at
the length of the yoga DVD. A good yoga DVD should be at
least 3 hours long, and offer multiple routines to
choose from so that you can vary your practice to fit
your mood.
-
Finally,
decide how much guidance you want during the routine.
Each yoga DVD
is different, some offering detailed pose instructions
throughout the sequence. This can be great in the beginning,
but tedious later on when you already know the correct
positioning. Some yoga DVDs don't have much detailed
instruction, which is nice when you want to flow with the
routine, but doesn't help you to do the yoga techniques
correctly.
We have
addressed this issue: every yoga DVD that we offer has a pose
guide section that goes over each pose in detail, so you
don't have to keep hearing the detailed guidance during the
main sequences, and you can just flow and enjoy!

Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries by Susi
Hately Aldous
Anatomy and Asana offers an easy and successful method to learn
anatomy and its relationship to yoga in a way that helps prevent
injuries. It is written by a certified yoga teacher with a diverse
background in kinesiology, ergonomics, and physical rehabilitation.
Anatomy and Asana answers many practical questions that are often
asked by yoga students – about back pain, knee pain, and shoulder pain;
about clenching the butt in back bends, and how to release the
hamstrings or prevent hamstring tearing in forward bends. The book
combines hands-on information with illuminating drawings, stories, and
helpful tips to show you how to practice yoga with less pain. It informs
without overwhelming the reader with too much information.
Anatomy and Asana is divided into four parts: basics of anatomy;
language of anatomy and movement; the eight essential principles of
movement as they relate to yoga; and application of these principles to
specific groups of yoga asana: standing poses, back bends, forward
bends, twists, and inversions. For each group, the book shows where
there is a tendency for injury and what you can do to instill space in
your body and thereby prevent injury from occurring.

Yoga for the Core: Finding Stability in
an Unstable Environment by Suzette O’Byrne
The core itself is the root of our
being, the center of our balance, and in a healthy body is also the root
of our movements. Many of us know how to train the “outer core” but are
disconnected from our “inner core.” By learning how to reconnect to your
inner core, you can prevent/recover from injuries, improve your posture,
enhance athletic performance and create more efficient movement
patterns.
In this book you will learn: # how to
cultivate your core # the difference between the inner and outer core #
how to develop strength and ease in both # how to improve pelvic
stability # the importance of diaphragmatic movement to stability of the
core # the difference between Pilates and yoga breathing # the
connection between poor core stability and injury # how to recover from
injury by improving core stability # practices that will progressively
stabilize and strengthen your core.
