About the Video

Muscle Energy Techniques (MET) cover manipulative treatments which involves positioning of the joint and client actively uses and contracts his/her muscles in a specific direction against the therapist's release and followed by release. MET works based on the principle of reciprocal inhibition, which states that when muscles on one side of a joint contract, the muscles on the other side (antagonist) must relax. MET can be used to stretch tight muscles or fascia, strengthen weak muscles, release hypertonicity, lengthen shortened muscles, improve musculoskeletal function, mobilise restricted joints, and to improve range of motion.

Muscle Energy Techniques originated in Osteopathy and now incorporated into many disciplines, and are grounded in a foundation of clinical and empirical reasoning. MET was created with an appreciation of the role soft tissue has to play as a possible causative and contributing factor in the development and perpetuation of articular dysfunction. MET is fast becoming an integral tool to the overall treatment regime for many qualified Remedial and Soft Tissue Therapists.

These two DVDs are from live presentation from seminars conducted in Melbourne.

Muscle Energy Technique of the Pelvis and Lower Limb

Running time: 120 mins

Alison Bell discusses and demonstrates both assessment and treatment of dysfunction within the pelvis, which is crucial, and yet previously neglected component of the musculo-skeletal system, and lower limb, from the perspective of the mechanism of injury. Importantly, consideration is discussed in reference to the functional capacity of adjacent musculature to facilitate ongoing pathologies during gait, for example, the end result of which is so often chronic dysfunction. Alison's principle is "Restoring function rather than treating syndrome".

  • Definition of MET
  • 3 areas of Evaluation & Treatment
