Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage |
|
Aloha from Hawaii (Means "God in us") Lomi Lomi, also known as Kahuna Bodywork, is an ancient massage performed by Hawaiians. It has been handed down through Polynesian families for generations. Lomi Lomi has various meanings: 'massage', 'rubbing', 'love through palm' or to break up into small pieces. One of the intentions of Lomi Lomi is to find congested areas of the body and disperse them through rhythmic movements. With Lomi Lomi Massage, massage therapists will discover a wonderful blend of therapeutic strokes that together create the magical touch of the islands, known as “the dance of massage”.
|
| Lomi Lomi developed out of the Hawaiian philosophy of Huna; that is, a belief in harmony and balance in all areas of physical and emotional health. Practioners work intuitively with clients using their hands, elbows, and forearms to apply long, gliding strokes, rhythmic movements, and pressure. This technique is very nurturing; practitioners acknowledge that love and a pure heart is important to the process, and sometimes the session will begin with a chant or prayer. Sometimes more than one practioner will work on different parts of a client at the same time to facilitate a feeling of wholeness -- a main component of the practice. |

Tamara studied with Auntie Margaret in 1973. Auntie
Margaret Machade, who studied and inherited the tradition of Lomi Lomi, is the
only non-Hawaiian female practitioner of this technique officially recognized by
Hawaiian authorities on the subject. Tamara apprenticed with her until she
received her license from the State of Hawaii in September of 1974. There was no
formal school then, and Tamara feels honored to have worked one on one with
Auntie in order to learn this wonderful healing art.
In 1986 Tamara moved to California from Hawaii and worked at the Radisson River Ridge, home of the L.A. Raiders summer training camp. For 8 years, some of the most respected names in football came to experience Lomi Lomi, a massage technique most of them had never heard of, but quickly learned to appreciate. Tamara's years at the Radisson resulted in building a community awareness of Lomi Lomi and in 1994 she became a California state certified Lomi Lomi massage instructor. Tamara travels throughout the United States teaching and sharing this ancient healing art, as well as offering private Lomi Lomi sessions in Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.
