Massage Therapy for Fibromyalgia

About the DVD  |  DVD Content  |  About the Instructor

Fibromyalgia is relatively common disorder affecting primarily women in the 25-45 year age group. It is frequently a diagnosis of exclusion where the symptoms cannot be attributed to other causes. Normally it has a slow onset, and although non-fatal and non-degenerative, it causes chronic long-term difficulties and may, in rare instances, become debilitating.

This DVD describes the symptoms and experiences of Fibromyalgia sufferers, and shows how to use bodywork and various supplements to address the most common symptoms. You will learn to evaluate the eighteen tender spots that are the diagnosis for Fibromyalgia, as well as massage sessions for sleep, pain and headaches. This detailed, informative program will give you the tools you need to effectively help those with Fibromyalgia.

Throughout his 25-year career as an herbalist and bodywork practitioner, Karta Purkh Singh Khalsa has been working with clients with fibromyalgia. On this DVD, he presents detailed descriptions of the complexity of the syndrome, its symptomatology and its associated conditions. As he explains, the hallmark symptom of fibromyalgia is consistent, unremitting muscle pain throughout the body. But there are no definitive medical tests for fibromyalgia; blood work and lab tests often yield normal results. Diagnosis is based on extreme irritation in 11 of 18 distinct tender points with widespread pain in two quadrants of the body. Commonly, patients have experienced recent trauma—car accident, athletic injury, emotional upheaval—and suffer from chronic insomnia. Interwoven with Khalsa’s lecture segments, Sean Riehl offers clear, precise and in-depth demonstrations of assessment and massage. He gives three specific sessions: massage for sleep (20 minutes), massage for pain (23 minutes) and massage for headaches (37 minutes).  The DVD also includes two patients’ subjective experiences. Osteopathic physician and acupuncturist Daniel Diamond presents on acupuncture, and Khalsa also gives recommendations for diet and exercise.
