Deep Tissue Massage

A Visual Guide to Techniques Revised Edition

Revised and Expanded Edition

The New Second Edition, with Foreword by Tom Myers.

With 288 pages, more than 250 photographs and over 50 detailed anatomy illustrations, this in depth book clearly illustrates hundreds of effective therapeutic myofascial release techniques.

This book is the standard guide to the essentials of touch, biomechanics, and positioning options for a multitude of strategies to treat all major conditions encountered in a bodywork practice.

The book is divided into three sections. “Fundamentals” covers basic skills of palpation, explaining the deeper layers of the body and presenting detailed instruction on working with these layers to release tension. This section gives clear information on the proper use of knuckles, fist, forearms, and elbows in preventing injury to the therapist. “Strategies” offers more precise protocols and treatment plans for the entire body with emphasis on client positioning options to stretch muscles rather than just kneading tissues. “Caveats” details areas in which the practitioner needs to exercise caution.

Deep Tissue Massage presents a wealth of information in a way the therapist can immediately utilize. This new edition has been thoroughly revised and includes a preface to the new edition, a foreword, an index, a Suggested Reading list, and extended sections on integrating deep tissue massage into bodywork practice and the psychology of treating injuries.

Fundamentals of Deep Tissue Therapy
  • Biomechanics
  • Tools
  • Knuckles
  • Types of strokes
  • Caveats

Many massage therapy books immediately begin demonstrating strokes without providing a base of fundamental theory. This can lead to unimaginative and rote strokes performed without an understanding of the essentials of how a therapist should use their energy properly, avoid injuries, and most important, develop a sensitive and effective touch.

Clinical Massage Therapy Techniques

Dozens of not only "strokes" but detailed explanations of how to skilfully perform them. Instructions are preceded by anatomical drawings to help you visualize the structures. These techniques can free you from the "cookie cutter" repetition of assembly line massage.

Therapeutic Massage Strategies

The reality of any private massage practice or work in a medical setting is that clients arrive with complaints and injuries. Many massage therapists do not feel comfortable in treating conditions or in answering questions about how clients may be able to help themselves. Knowing how to deal with these issues can be the element that elevates your practice to a whole new plateau. Subjects include: Plantar Fasciaitis, Sprained Ankles, Knee Pain, Sciatica and Piriformis Syndrome, Tennis and Golfer's Elbow, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Minor Back Pain, and Rotator Cuff.

Body Reading and Lesson Planning

Body reading is a basic prerequisite that is necessary for effective session planning

Human Anatomy: directions for strokes

Being able to visualize the soft tissue and osseous anatomy is essential for having a clear intention in your strokes and strategies. Directions for strokes are prefaced with over 50 detailed anatomical drawings to provide an understanding of the specific structures and kinesiology we work with.

Testimonials & Reviews

"This is a high quality book that I would recommend to any massage therapists as a very handy addition to their library and treatment room." - Michelle Yaffe, AAMT  Massage Therapists, Summer 2008

"Art’s passion, teaching expertise, and therapeutic knowledge blend beautifully in this user-friendly text. Every somatic therapist will gain valuable insights for energizing their practice and enhancing skills. The book is obviously a labor of love, and as the great author, poet, and artist John Ruskin once stated, 'When love and skill work together, expect a masterpiece.'" —Erik Dalton, Ph.D., Developer of the Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques and founder of the Freedom From Pain Institute

"Art Riggs is masterful at teaching and explaining deep bodywork. We unreservedly recommend his materials in our workshops, and his updated Deep Tissue Massage will be an indispensable aid to practitioners, teachers, schools, and students." —Til Luchau, Certified Advanced Rolfer, Faculty of the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration and Director and Lead Instructor of Advanced-Trainings.com

"This new edition is a significant improvement. The photos and drawings are much clearer, the layout and design is livelier, even the paper is brighter. And this new edition includes an index and is key referenced to the DVD. While the book is written by a practitioner for practitioners, its descriptions are so clear that anyone interested in the subject can learn a lot about deep tissue massage." Rich Poley, author of Self-Massage for Athletes (Boulder, Colorado).

Having had a quick flick through both the book & disc #1 of the DVD's, my 1st impression is that this is a fantastically useful body of work which I'll enjoy using as a basic reference text both for me & some of my more advanced students.  Congratulations to you for putting it together ! (and incidentally to my teacher, Tom Myers, for recommending it to me!) Philip Newstead (U.K.)

"These strategies and theories are extremely helpful to me in my massage practice. I work more efficiently and my clients noticed the more effective results immediately. If you want to integrate deep tissue work and myofascial release techniques into your practice, this is the one book you need."   Andreas W. Los Angeles, CA

"This book is packed with information and is so much more than just some fancy strokes... It has changed and enlightened the way I look at working with tissue and has made my work more effective and fun."  Kerry Loeb,

"...superb teaching tools for the classroom and matchless sources of clinical massage reference."

Keith Grant, PhD, NCTMB Research Physicist and Director of the McKinnon Institute Sports & Deep Tissue Program

"Art Riggs has dedicated himself for over a decade to sharing his knowledge and wisdom of the body. We highly recommend this book and video for students and health professionals alike..."

Paulette and Richard Bergess, Directors, The San Francisco School of Massage

"I was about to go away for a four-day workshop this month that was going to cost me close to $2,100. I had to cancel, but decided to still treat myself to your series. Well, what a lucky break for me. I cannot imagine anything I could have learned at that workshop that can compare with what I am getting from your teachings."

Laura G. (Canada)

“Deep Tissue Myofascial Release Massage’ has enabled our school to plan a 100 hour curriculum around its clear progression from the basic skills to clearly defined strategies.”

Julie Morrison

Director of Massage Western Career College Pleasant Hill, CA

“The thorough demonstrations — not only of specific massage techniques, but the subtleties of working with tissue —show how to work with virtually all soft tissue situations encountered in a bodywork practice. Art Riggs has made this valuable information accessible for both the relatively new massage therapist and experienced professionals performing sophisticated clinical therapy.”

Helen James

Masters in Physical Therapy Stanford University & Professor Emeritus California State University Fresno, CA

“…so much more than just showing strokes. This series has transformed the way that I work. At a fraction of the price I’d pay at a school, this is an entire bodywork course that I can study at home. It will be a reference for years to come”

Justine Jacobs

Massage Therapist

“I wish I had had this resource 12 years ago when I was in physical therapy school. These products have dramatically improved the quality of my work and saved my body from injury.”

Patrick Hannum

Physical therapist and Rolfer

"Explanations were clear with more than a hint of experience. I was very pleased with the result, and you should be proud of the product, Art. One of the main reasons I bought the DVD's for, is to look at treatment from a different perspective. Even though I was aware of some things, the DVD reminded me about them, and also stimulated other possibilities. It keeps me fresh and interested as well. I will be referring back to them many times in the future."

Peter G., Osteopath, (London)
