Visceral Manipulation: the DVD

Visceral Manipulation seeks to correct pain and dysfunction caused by imbalance between the organs and structures of the body.

In this DVD, pioneering osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral demonstrates and discusses many of the diagnostic and treatment techniques that he and his colleagues developed in their system of visceral manipulation. Also presented are original gross anatomical dissections prepared specifically by the author for this video format, together with graphical representations.

The central premise of Visceral Manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera can be beneficially used in the treatment of a wide variety of problems affecting any of the body’s systems.

Visceral Manipulation (2006 Revised Edition)

Read sample pages from the book (in pdf)

Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models for understanding the mechanics of proper and improper motion of the musculoskeletal system. In this important and pioneering work, that same structural vision is applied to the visceral system.

According to the Upledger Institute, "Visceral Manipulation (VM) is a gentle hands-on therapy that works through the body's visceral system (the heart, liver, intestines and other internal organs) to locate and alleviate abnormal points of tension throughout the body. VM employs specifically placed manual forces that work to encourage the normal mobility, tone and motion of the viscera and their connective tissues. Trained practitioners use the rhythmic motions of the visceral system to evaluate how abnormal forces interplay, overlap and affect the normal body forces at work. These gentle manipulations can potentially improve the functioning of individual organs, the systems the organs function within, and the structural integrity of the entire body."

In this revised edition, over a hundred-and-thirty new illustrations and photographs, many of them in two colors, graphically depict the ideas in the text. Minor updates have also been made to the original text.

Visceral Manipulation II (Revised Edition)

In this book, Jean-Pierre Barral further develops the concepts, techniques, and approaches first described in his pioneering work Visceral Manipulation. While that text focused on the fundamental anatomical and physiological background of this approach to treatment, along with the basic manipulative techniques, Visceral Manipulation II is centered around clinical signs, diagnostic methods, emotional connections, and more advanced techniques.

The first chapter introduces the concept of lesional chains and reflexogenic zones that are crucial to the utilization of visceral approaches in the context of osteopathy. There is an in-depth discussion of such unique diagnostic methods as general and local listening, proper uses of the Adson-Wright and other orthopedic tests, the relationship between the emotions and the organs, techniques for restoring proper visceral viscoelasticity, and strategies for treatment, including some special problems associated with manipulation in children.

Other chapters discuss such structures as the peritoneum, spleen, and pancreas that were not covered in Visceral Manipulation. There are also discussions of the gastroesophageal junction, stomach and duodenum, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, jejunoileum and colon, and kidneys. Each of these chapters complements and expands upon those in the first book by providing fresh and more detailed perspectives on important aspects of using visceral manipulation in the clinic.

In this revised edition, all of the illustrations have been updated, photographs have been added, and the text revised to more closely follow Jean-Pierre Barral’s present approach to visceral manipulation. New techniques are introduced, and background information provided on such topics as the relationship of the different organs to the emotions.

Visceral Manipulation II is an important book for all practitioners who wish to advance their skills in visceral manipulation. REVIEWS "It is such a relief to finally find works on alternative approaches to medicine written by and for scientifically-oriented minds. The language is beautiful, clear and to the point." —Massage

Manual Thermal Evaluation by Jean-Pierre Barral

Since the time of Hippocrates, medical practitioners have noted the clinical significance of temperature changes found over different parts of the body. In Manual Thermal Evaluation Jean-Pierre Barral brings this form of diagnosis into the new millenium.

As one aspect of the physical examination, manual thermal evaluation is a method that utilizes sensitivity to temperature changes to identify dysfunction within the body. It is useful across a wide spectrum of health disciplines, and augments other forms of diagnosis.

Manual Thermal Evaluation begins with a review of the scientific understanding of body heat, and the clinical significance of changes in surface temperature. The reader is then provided with the tools that are needed to transform one's hands into sensitive evaluative instruments. Each area of the body is surveyed, from the cranium, face and neck to the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and posterior visceral projections. This is an indispensable book for practitioners who want to discover more of what their hands can tell them.

Jean-Pierre Barral The Thorax

While Jean-Pierre Barral's  Visceral Manipulation and Visceral Manipulation II, focus on the abdomen, in The Thorax the author turns his unique gaze to the thoracic cage and its contents.

Barral begins by describing the thorax as an area of conflict and contrast: it must protect the organs enclosed within, yet must also allow exchanges with the neck and abdomen. Problems with either of its dual roles of protection and exchange lie at the root of most thoracic disorders. Detailed descriptions and illustrations are provided of tests for dysfunction and treatment of the nonaxial joints, fasciae and viscera of this important area of the body.

Among the special topics contained in this volume are global and local listening of the thorax; utilization of the completed Adson-Wright test; cervical attachments of the pleura; intrasternal tests and treatment; utilization of various access points to the phrenic nerve; and stretching along the orientation of the coronary arteries.

The Thorax is an important book for all practitioners who wish to broaden their skills in visceral manipulation.

Trauma: An Osteopathic Approach by Jean-Pierre Barral and Alain Croibier

This well-researched, richly illustrated book begins with an overview of the biomechanics of trauma. The authors demonstrate how an osteopathic-based mechanical approach to trauma can be applied to the entire body, with a special focus on the phenomenon of whiplash. From here they move on to a functional-anatomical approach, focusing on the skull and other aspects of the central nervous system, as well as the structures that surround and protect it. Finally, they view trauma from the perspective of how it affects the different tissues and systems of the body, including the osteoarticular, visceral, and vascular systems, and the various sequelae that can occur in each of these systems.

Having presented an osteopathic interpretation of trauma, the authors apply some of their own unique methods of osteopathic diagnosis, particularly with regard to those structures that are often affected by trauma: the dural tube, cranial sutures, craniofacial membranous junction, mediastinum, and spleen. The book concludes with a description of manual techniques devised by the authors to treat some of the more recalcitrant sequelae of trauma.

'The tissues possess an infallible memory for trauma . . Everything is recorded in them.'

'A certain progression of testing and evaluation is essential to demonstrate the unexpected effects of traumatic sequelae, particularly if the injury is an old one.'

'Tissues can only be treated if the osteopath respects them. The right key can easily unlock the door.'

Urogenital Manipulation by Jean-Pierre Barral

This book completes Jean-Pierre Barral's widely acclaimed four-volume exploration of the osteopathic implications of the dysfunctions of the internal viscera. The focus of this volume is on the pelvis, especially of women.

The introduction provides an overview of the relationships of the pelvis and spine. Tests which are particularly useful for pelvic disorders, including the genitohumeral and completed Laségue's tests, are detailed. Also included are imaging studies that demonstrate the utility of the viscersl manipulative approach to the pelvis.

Chapter 2 focuses on the bladder, and especially the treatment of stress incontinence and the effects of the various systems of pressure on the lower pelvis. The role of bladder restrictions in low back pain, lower leg problems, and hip pain is explained.

Chapter 3 discusses the uterus, focusing on the cervix. The reader will gain an appreciation for the osteopathic view of the importance of the different motions affecting the uterus, and how they can become dysfunctional.

Chapter 4 concludes the tour of the female pelvis with the uterine tubes and ovaries. The holistic osteopathic viewpoint is typified by Barral's presentation of the various elements that must work in harmony for fertilization to occur. REVIEWS "A most precise and refined exploration of the motions of the urogenital system, structures and their functional relationships." —from the Foreword by Tom Shaver, D.O.

Understanding the Messages of Your Body. How to Interpret Physical and Emotional Signals to Achieve Optimal Health by Jean-Pierre Barral

Fears, anxieties, traumas, and physical and emotional shocks imprint on the body and remain dormant in its vast memory store until they are roused by an event or encounter. They may manifest in a different form or place—a fearful incident may transform itself into a stomachache or a headache, or even a chronic disease. Pain creates its own path. In particular, psychological and emotional stresses affect the functioning of the internal organs. In Understanding the Messages of Your Body, Dr. Jean-Pierre Barral explains the relationships that exist between internal organs and emotions, to allow us to free ourselves from the effects of present and past tensions and traumas.

The book opens with an explanation of the body-mind relationship and goes on to show how physical-emotional therapy works based on examples from Dr. Barral’s clinical practice. The second part of the book offers detailed analyses of various “types” of human personality and the physical-emotional complexes and related organ dysfunctions that accompany them. The author offers advice and encouragement to improve physical, psychological, and emotional health, and recommends physical exercises, psychotherapeutic approaches, and dietary plans that can be used by both professional therapists and the average reader.
