Cranio Sacral Therapy |
CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and
enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral
system - comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and
protect the brain and spinal cord. Therapists tune into the craniosacral rhythm
(which can be felt at different sites around the body) and evaluate the skull
for symmetry of the cranial bones and the flow of the cerebral spinal fluid.
Using a soft touch, practitioners release
restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the
central nervous system.Read about Myofascial Release and CranioSacral therapy (Watch a video of John Updleger). |

Visceral Manipulation: The DVD In this DVD, pioneering osteopath Jean-Pierre Barral demonstrates and discusses many of the diagnostic and treatment techniques that he and his colleagues developed in their system of visceral manipulation. Also presented are original gross anatomical dissections prepared specifically by the author for this video format, together with graphical representations. The central premise of visceral manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system. And like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera may be beneficially used in the treatment of internal organ dysfunction. Level: Advanced Running Time: 140 mins |

Jean-Pierre Barral, Pierre Mercier Visceral Manipulation (2006 Revised Edition) Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models for understanding the mechanics of proper and improper motion of the musculoskeletal system. In this important and pioneering work, that same structural vision is applied to the visceral system. The central premise of Visceral Manipulation is that the interrelationship of structure and function among the internal organs is at least as strong as that among the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, like the musculoskeletal system, manipulation of the viscera can be beneficially used in the treatment of a wide variety of problems affecting any of the body’s systems. In this revised edition, over a hundred-and-thirty new illustrations and photographs, many of them in two colours, graphically depict the ideas in the text. Minor updates have also been made to the original text. |

Visceral Manipulation II (Revised Edition)In this book, Jean-Pierre Barral further develops the concepts, techniques, and approaches first described in his pioneering work Visceral Manipulation. While that text focused on the fundamental anatomical and physiological background of this approach to treatment, along with the basic manipulative techniques, Visceral Manipulation II is centered around clinical signs, diagnostic methods, emotional connections, and more advanced techniques. The first chapter introduces the concept of lesional chains and reflexogenic zones that are crucial to the utilization of visceral approaches in the context of osteopathy. There is an in-depth discussion of such unique diagnostic methods as general and local listening, proper uses of the Adson-Wright and other orthopedic tests, the relationship between the emotions and the organs, techniques for restoring proper visceral viscoelasticity, and strategies for treatment, including some special problems associated with manipulation in children. Other chapters discuss such structures as the peritoneum, spleen, and pancreas that were not covered in Visceral Manipulation. There are also discussions of the gastroesophageal junction, stomach and duodenum, liver, gallbladder and bile ducts, jejunoileum and colon, and kidneys. Each of these chapters complements and expands upon those in the first book by providing fresh and more detailed perspectives on important aspects of using visceral manipulation in the clinic.

Manual Thermal Evaluation
by Jean-Pierre Barral
Since the time of Hippocrates, medical practitioners have noted the clinical significance of temperature changes found over different parts of the body. In Manual Thermal Evaluation Jean-Pierre Barral brings this form of diagnosis into the new millenium. As one aspect of the physical examination, manual thermal evaluation is a method that utilizes sensitivity to temperature changes to identify dysfunction within the body. It is useful across a wide spectrum of health disciplines, and augments other forms of diagnosis. Manual Thermal Evaluation begins with a review of the scientific understanding of body heat, and the clinical significance of changes in surface temperature. The reader is then provided with the tools that are needed to transform one's hands into sensitive evaluative instruments. Each area of the body is surveyed, from the cranium, face and neck to the thorax, abdomen, pelvis and posterior visceral projections. This is an indispensable book for practitioners who want to discover more of what their hands can tell them.

Trauma: An Osteopathic Approach
by Jean-Pierre
Barral and Alain Croibier
This well-researched, richly illustrated book begins with an overview of the biomechanics of trauma. The authors demonstrate how an osteopathic-based mechanical approach to trauma can be applied to the entire body, with a special focus on the phenomenon of whiplash. From here they move on to a functional-anatomical approach, focusing on the skull and other aspects of the central nervous system, as well as the structures that surround and protect it. Finally, they view trauma from the perspective of how it affects the different tissues and systems of the body, including the osteoarticular, visceral, and vascular systems, and the various sequelae that can occur in each of these systems. Having presented an osteopathic interpretation of trauma, the authors apply some of their own unique methods of osteopathic diagnosis, particularly with regard to those structures that are often affected by trauma: the dural tube, cranial sutures, craniofacial membranous junction, mediastinum, and spleen. The book concludes with a description of manual techniques devised by the authors to treat some of the more recalcitrant sequelae of trauma.

Visceral Osteopathy: The Peritoneal
Organs
Jérôme Helsmoortel Thomas Hirth Peter Wührl Visceral Osteopathy: The Peritoneal Organs is concerned with the application of osteopathic concepts to the abdominal viscera, specifically the organs of the gastrointestinal tract. It lays out a comprehensive manual approach to these viscera based on physiological research and extensive clinical experience. The visceral paradigm developed in this book is centered on the mechanical expression of the biological forces within the organs themselves. In this paradigm, the most important aspect of the viscera of the gut is their intrinsic, autonomous regulation. The focus is therefore on the inner mechanical architecture and power centers of the viscera. Visceral Osteopathy offers a comprehensive and clinically sound system of diagnosis and treatment of the digestive organs, and firmly establishes visceral manipulation in the context of contemporary physiological research. |

CranioSacral Therapy. What It is, How It Works. by John Upledger With the troubling side effects and surging costs of medications and surgery, many are increasingly turning to CranioSacral Therapy as an effective, drug-free, and non-invasive therapy. A gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of the craniosacral system — the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord — CST boosts the body’s natural healing processes and has proven efficacious for a wide range of medical problems from migraines, learning disabilities, and post-traumatic stress disorder to fibromyalgia, chronic neck and back pain, and TMJ. This book provides a broad introduction to this therapy by way of short pieces written by a number of well-known practitioners or experts. In addition to pioneer John E. Upledger, contributors include Richard Grossinger (Planet Medicine), Don Ash (Lessons from the Sessions), Don Cohen (An Introduction to Craniosacral Therapy), and Bill Gottlieb (Alternative Cures). Each selection covers a different aspect of CST: what it is, what it does, how it heals, what the practitioner does during a CST session, CST’s relationship to cranial osteopathy and other healing therapies, as well as other topics of interest to the beginner. |

Wisdom in the Body: The Craniosacral
Approach to Essential Health by
Michael Kern
Accumulations of life stresses — physical injuries, emotional and psychological stresses, birth traumas, and toxicity — can become imprinted in the tissues, acting like a videotape that is replayed whenever stimulated. Biodynamic craniosacral therapy aims to resolve the trapped forces that underlie and drive these trauma-based patterns of disease and suffering in body and mind. Wisdom in the Body teaches practitioners to develop finely tuned skills of hands-on palpation and perception to sense the body’s subtle rhythms and patterns of inertia or congestion, with the goal of ending trauma and facilitating the expression of the breath of life. A comprehensive introduction to this practice, the book draws on the insights of pioneers like Drs. W. G. Sutherland and Franklyn Sills to explain the key principles about the body’s natural intention to heal and how this capability can be encouraged. A valuable resource for students, practitioners, and the lay reader, the book also includes a foreword by Dr. Franklyn Sills. Michael Kern, D.O., R.C.S.T., M.I.Cr.A., N.D., is a craniosacral therapist, osteopath, and naturopath. He is founder and senior tutor of the Craniosacral Therapy Educational Trust in London, senior tutor for the College of Osteopaths, the University of Westminster, and the International Cranial Association. He currently teaches Craniosacral Therapy courses in the U.K., U.S.A., Switzerland, and Italy. Kern lives in London. Reviews/Endorsements: "A well-written, practical overview of craniosacral therapy, one of the safest and most effective techniques for improving health that I have found. I wish that more practitioners like Michael Kern were available." - Andrew Weil, author of Natural Health, Natural Healing. “This is an amazing piece of work, deeply intelligent and profoundly inspirational. Michael Kern has delivered the goods. When you finish this book you will either want to become a craniosacral practitioner or rush out and find one. If you are in a body, read this book.“ - Gabrielle Roth, founder of the Moving Center in New York, and author of Sweat Your Prayers: Movement as Spiritual Practice and Maps to Ecstasy |

Craniosacral Biodynamics. Vol. I : The
Breath of Life, Biodynamics and Fundamental Skills
http://www.karuna-institute.co.uk/
Craniosacral therapy is based on the belief that
functions of the human system are maintained and integrated by a
biodynamic force known as “primary respiration,” or the breath of life.
Found in the brain, spinal cord, and bodily fluids, this rhythmic pulse
promotes healing and health. Volume 1 established a foundation in the
basic theory and practitioner skills of CST. Written for students and
practitioners but accessible to lay readers, this text presents the
fundamental concepts and techniques of a method that redirects the
cerebrospinal fluid to areas of imbalance, thus enhancing overall
health. Craniosacral Biodynamics is an approach to work in the cranial
field which has its roots in the later work or Dr. William Garner
Sutherland, the founder of the the cranial approach. These two volumes
are geared to be text books for students and practitioners which outline
a particular biodynamic outlook within the cranial field. The work
within these volumes is different from most foundation course books
currently available. Dr. Sutherland emphasised that the human system is
not just a mechanism, but is ordered by the deepest spiritual sources.
He called the Creative Intelligence in action within the universe, the
Breath of Life. It is this Breath of Life which is the focus for a
clinical understanding, even if we only perceive the forces it
generates. This book focuses on the Breath of Life as the ordering and
organising principle, not just of the human system, but within the world
at large. |

Craniosacral Biodynamics. Vol. II : The
Primal Midline and the Organization of the Body
http://www.karuna-institute.co.uk/
In this book, Franklyn Sills extends the concepts and
skills covered in his first volume to the specific structural membrane
and tissue dynamics of the human form, demonstrating the connection
between craniosacral therapy and osteopathic healing. Topics include
pelvic and vertebral relationships and birth dynamics. Sills’s attention
to the healing of trauma brings to bear powerful tools that can help
people access deep healing resources.
Craniosacral Biodynamics is an energy medicine which attempts to align
us to the deepest wellspring of life. It takes a biodynamic approach in
that the intentions are to clarify our relationship to the Breath of
Life and its ordering processes, and to function clinically as a servant
to the healing processes it unfolds. Our work is clearly seen to be one
of supporting these intentions, we do not "do" the healing, we listen to
and support its unfoldment. This work strongly de-emphasised the CRI
level of action. |

Craniosacral Therapy and the Energetic Body: An Overview of Craniosacral Biodynamics by Roger Gilchrist This useful book discusses craniosacral therapy’s history and present situation as well as its spiritual implications and practical contributions in the world of healthcare. Gilchrist demonstrates how the subtle patterns of this practice become a dynamic force in the body, and how this influences overall functioning. What most sets the book apart is Gilchrist’s discussion of the relationship of the craniosacral system and biodynamic functions to the human energy system. Though dealing with a complicated topic, the book provides a grounded, progressive approach that is both specific and insightful. Reviews/Endorsements: "Roger Gilchrist has done a superb job of compiling craniosacral terminology in a clear, concise way...His many years of clinical practice illuminate this fine book." — Hugh Milne, author of The Heart of Listening: A Visionary Approach to Craniosacral Work "I have personally witnessed dramatic improvements accomplished by competent craniosacral therapists. This is a technique which deserves careful consideration." — C. Norman Shealy, MD, PhD, Founding President, American Holistic Medical Association |

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Volume One by Michael Shea This book presents craniosacral therapy as a compassionate healing art that can be used by psychologists, midwives, chiropractors, and massage and physical therapists. Author Michael Shea explains how the fluids of the body hold stress and offers practical, extremely gentle touch exercises that help practitioners heal physical, spiritual, and emotional conditions in both infants and adults. He also presents a unique perspective on depth psychology and embryology—the defining differences between biodynamic craniosacral therapy and other forms of cranial therapy.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy
Volume Two by Michael Shea In this second volume, author Michael Shea goes deeper into the entire biodynamic paradigm, analyzing the relationship of trauma resolution, psychodynamics, and shamanism, and providing practical meditations, visualizations, and clinical skills to restore physical, spiritual, and emotional health. The book opens by exploring the meaning of biodynamic, followed by a discussion of human embryology as a path to healing in any form of therapy. This section offers a set of pioneering techniques based on perceiving stillness—slow movement–as a fundamental healing influence. The next section describes the bridge between trauma resolution therapy and biodynamic work, establishes a new containment model, and offers skills for resolving shock and trauma. A special section contains fresh strategies for anyone working with infants and children, along with a provocative analysis linking the infant-mother relationship to the patient-therapist relationship. Finally, Shea provides a unique perspective on depth psychology, mythology, and healing. This includes the defining difference between biodynamic craniosacral therapy and all other forms of craniosacral therapy: the focus on the nature of spiritual disease and shamanism.

Answer to Trivia: Which movie shows
craniosacral therapy? In the movie X-Men: The Last Stand, Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) is shown to give cranial therapy to the Dark Phoenix. Although it is not mentioned as CST, the scene suggests a cranial hold, more an energetic therapy without touching the cranium. |
