Clair Davies, The Frozen Shoulder Workbook

Author Clair Davies’s success in treating his own frozen shoulder led him to undertake an extensive study of trigger points and referred pain that eventually resulted in his runaway best-seller, The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook. Now this renowned bodywork expert and educator revisits the subject of frozen shoulder, offering the most detailed and comprehensive manual yet available about this painful and debilitating condition —a useful resource for self-care and for bodywork practitioners looking to expand their treatment repertoire.

Frozen shoulder, the syndrome name for several muscle, joint, and tendon-related symptoms, is experienced as pain and a loss of motion in the shoulder and upper arm. Frozen shoulder is most often observed in women between the ages of forty and sixty and in individuals with type-two diabetes, although a man or woman of any age may be afflicted. Traditional medical treatments for frozen shoulder, which rely on painkillers, steroid injections, surgery, manipulation under anesthesia, and physical therapy, often do little to moderate symptoms or speed recovery.

Trigger points in the four rotator cuff muscles that cover the front and back of the shoulder blade are the most frequent cause of shoulder pain. But up to twenty muscles are involved in operating the shoulder and all of them are vulnerable to strain.

When a shoulder muscle is made dysfunctional by trigger points, other muscles have to compensate. Under the extra burden, each muscle acquires trigger points in turn, until every muscle in the region is in trouble. This can lead to progressively limited movement of the arm, ending ultimately in a frozen shoulder.

Reviews:

A well-written exposition on a difficult subject. —Daniel J. Wallace, MD, clinical professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine

In this outstanding book, Clair Davies aptly explains the rational for the trigger point approach based on the teachings of Drs. Janet Travell and David Simons to the treatment of frozen shoulder. He presents his hypothesis well. It is time for the medical profession to accept alternative therapies in treating this condition, which does not often respond to routine medical care. —Paul B. Brown, MD, Ph.D., rheumatologist and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington

Clair Davies has done it again. He has written a wonderful book that provides insight and practical advice for the treatment of a common problem: frozen or stiff shoulder. He shows where the pain is, what the problems are, and how an individual can treat it, sometimes with the help of a partner. His illustrations and directions are clear. His case examples are helpful. This is a very useful book for those who have had rotator cuff injuries or other shoulder problems. —Robert D. Gerwin, MD, president and medical director of Pain and Rehabilitation Medicine, Baltimore, MD, and the Janet G. Travell, MD, Seminar Series

From a practical point of view, this is a really exceptional workbook, which could become a best-seller in its field. It is a wonderful overview concerning trigger points, which are the most common cause of frozen shoulder. I can recommend the book to all who are engaged in treating frozen shoulders, including medical doctors, therapists, and patients together with their partners. —Dieter Pongratz, MD, professor in the department of Neurology at the University of Munich Hospital, Friedrich-Baur-Institute, in Munich, Germany

Clair Davies was a leading authority on pain treatment and the author of the Trigger Point Therapy Workbook and The Frozen Shoulder Workbook. Through his books and workshops with his daughter Amber, he touched the lives of hundreds of massage therapists and thousands of ordinary, hurting people over the last ten years of his life. For many years, Mr. Davies was a leading piano tuner, technician, and rebuilder in the Lexington area. He had trained at the Steinway factory in New York, served as president of the Bluegrass chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild, and was a pioneer in developing the capability for individuals to perform such large-scale piano rebuilding tasks as complete grand piano soundboard replacement. But during his time in the piano business he had a lot of trouble with pain—neck pain, back pain, he had to face the fact that there really weren’t any good solutions for pain. The situation made him so mad and desperate that he made up my mind to fix the shoulder himself. He discovered Trigger points and how to effectively get rid of it. Sadly, Clair Davis passed away in December 2006. See his obituary
